Let's say you're driving along and see signs for a merge ahead. Common sense and decency tell us we should get over as soon as possible and not be "that person" who drives all the way to merge point before getting over. Well, in this case, common sense and what we've all learned is WRONG.

Because of the way traffic shockwaves work, moving over too early actually causes more traffic, pushing the line of stopped cars back twice as far. If everyone made two lines to all the way the merge point and then took turns—like a zipper—traffic would speed up and the jam might be eliminated altogether.
